As a physical therapy provider we have many tools in our toolkit to get our patients better. “Kinesio Taping” is one of the them. Kinesiological Therapeutic Taping or known as KT Taping can be a great tool to improve function and reduce pain for activity.
What is KT Taping?
Kinesiological Therapeutic(KT) Taping, is an elastic sport tape that is applied to undamaged skin and allows the body freedom of movement. It is latex free, strong adherence yet can be removed without damage to skin, and can be worn for up to 5 days. KT Tape is often used to support and relieve pain in muscles, joints, and ligaments. It helps reduce swelling, increase mobility, and improves recovery. It can be used to prevent or treat many common injuries including: sprains, strains, subluxations, and tendonitis. KT Tape works to provide support and pain relief before, during, and/or after an activity.
When to use Kinesio Taping
KT Tape is often used in helping treat sport injuries but can be used in treating non-sports related injuries. It is often used to help support areas of instability to improve function and movement, helps in muscle re-education, enhancing athletic performance, pain reduction, and improve blood flow and flood circulation. It is important to consult with a trained physical therapy provider to see how and when KT tape can be used for injury care.
Kinesio Taping Precautions
Since KT tape is applied on the skin it is important to avoid using it with the following conditions:
Open wounds. Using tape over a wound could lead to infection or skin damage.
Deep vein thrombosis. Increasing fluid flow could cause a blood clot to dislodge, which might be fatal.
Active cancer. Increasing blood supply to a cancerous growth could be dangerous.
Lymph node removal. Increasing fluid where a node is missing could cause swelling.
Diabetes. If you have reduced sensation in some areas, you might not notice a reaction to the tape.
Allergy. If your skin is sensitive to adhesives, you could trigger a strong reaction.
Fragile skin. If your skin is prone to tearing, you should avoid placing tape on it.
